>>>Moses is commanded in the book of Exodus to construct a tent called the tabernacle. This would be God’s dwelling place and the place where the people of Israel would worship and sacrifice to God for atonement for their sins.
*The was the “outer tabernacle” and the “inner tabernacle” (holy of holies)
*Outer tabernacle (lampstand, table, loaves of bread); inner tabernacle (gold altar of incense, ark of the covenant, Aaron’s staff, tablets, mercy seat)
>>>The book of Hebrews goes into depth regarding the new covenant under Christ and refers back to the tabernacle.
*Everything in the tabernacle was a copy of Heaven.
Hebrews 9:6–10 “With these things prepared like this, the priests enter the first room repeatedly, performing their ministry. But the high priest alone enters the second room, and he does that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit was making it clear that the way into the most holy place had not yet been disclosed while the first tabernacle was still standing. This is a symbol for the present time, during which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper’s conscience. They are physical regulations and only deal with food, drink, and various washings imposed until the time of the new order.”
Hebrews 9:11–12 “But Christ has appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come. In the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands (that is, not of this creation), he entered the most holy place once for all time, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.”
PASSAGE QUESTIONS:
How were sacrifices conducted in the tabernacle?
How do the practices in the tabernacle connect to Jesus?
Is this typology, prophecy, or Christophany?
>>>(v.6-7) These verses explain the operation of the tabernacle. All the priests were able to make sacrifices in the outer part of the tabernacle, but only the high priest was able to enter into the holy of holies.
>>>The high priest did this once a year for the sins of himself and the people.
*Sins that were done in ignorance-that people did not even know they committed. ALL sin needs to be atoned for.
>>>(v.8) The HS somehow was communicating that this wasn’t enough. The presence of God was still closed off and inaccessible.
>>>(v.9-10) The provisions for OT sacrifices were only for the outward and physical. They could not change the conscience (inner man; heart).
>>>(v.11-12) Jesus came as high priest, a high priest in the greater and more perfect tabernacle (the spiritual tabernacle-Heaven). He entered the most holy place and offered His own blood and obtained eternal redemption.
*There was no need to lamb and goats. Jesus was the lamb!
*There was no need for once a year sacrifices. Jesus brought something eternal!
>>>The tabernacle and the practices that took place in it pointed to Jesus, Who initiated a new order-a new covenant (typology).
